Augusta is a town in eastern Sicily, Italy located in the province of Siracusa. During World War II, Augusta was invaded on July 13, 1943 by the Eighth Army of the Allied troops led by British General Montgomery. Its name was given by Frederick II of Swabia, the "August", who founded it in 1232 and "Barbarossa" turned it into a harbor and trade centre.
The most interesting monuments are the castle of Frederick II of Swabia, built between 1232 and 1242, the Dome started in the 17th century and finished in the 18th century, and the Spanish gate (18th century). Augusta is an important commercial port with oil refineries that produce unleaded gasoline. |
